HR Tech and Marriage: How Selecting, Implementing, and Adopting HR Technology Mirrors the Journey of Marriage

Amol Pawar, January 31, 2025June 25, 2025

Marriage for many of us often becomes a world of mutual compromises where romance takes the backseat. Even though it is perceived as eternal bliss, the reality from ground zero is that it involves endless negotiations over chores, finances, in-laws, and more.

Despite all this, marriage is still an important institution because it becomes the framework for raising families, in the backdrop of emotional support and stability. From companionship to staying grounded in an increasingly disconnected world, marriage does offer a viable platform for staying committed, sharing goals, and meaningfully bonding between couples.

Before my readers start wondering if they’ve stumbled into a blog on marriage counseling, let me cut to the chase and get straight to the topic – how the journey of selecting to implementing HR Tech and its long-term adoption is surprisingly similar to marriage. If you are from the HR Tech fraternity, you‘ll get the crux of what I am trying to say. Let me explain though the similarities between these two completely unrelated processes.

Each phase in HR Tech — selection, implementation, and adoption —requires a distinct approach, much like the stages of finding, marrying, and staying with a life partner.

Join me as I explore this analogy in depth, with examples to bring it to life.

Let’s get started.

Stage 1: Selecting HR Tech: Finding “The One”

In marriage, the first step inevitably is to find the PERSON. So, dating is one of the ways to get there.

Similarly, the first step in adopting HR technology is selecting the right solution. It involves research and more research to find the best fit for your organization’s needs, goals, and culture.

Be it your life partner or HR Tech for your organization, at this stage you need to:

  • Understand Your Needs: Before dating or choosing an HR tech platform, clarity is key. For example, if your company struggles with employee turnover, you might need a system with robust analytics for tracking employee engagement and performance.
  • Compatibility Checks: Like asking, “Do we share the same values?” you’ll evaluate if the tech can integrate with your existing tools. For instance, if you’re using SAP for finance, the HR tech must sync seamlessly with it.
  • Seek Recommendations: Imagine a friend or a relative recommending someone who matches your personality. Similarly, consult industry peers or read reviews to shortlist vendors. A logistics company, for example, might prioritize tech solutions recommended by others in the supply chain industry.
  • Long-term Potential: A scalable system is like a partner with shared future goals. For instance, a startup expecting rapid growth might choose a cloud-based platform like Workday or BambooHR that scales effortlessly.

Stage 2: Implementing HR Technology: The Wedding

Implementation, or the WEDDING is the “Big Day.”

This is where everything comes together, in your personal life and the workplace.

It’s an exciting yet challenging phase but requires meticulous groundwork planning and communication.

Typically, this stage involves:

  • Detailed Planning: A wedding needs a timeline, and so does implementing HR tech. For example, a retail chain rolling out new scheduling software must plan the transition to minimize disruptions during peak sales seasons.
  • Effective Communication: Just as wedding guests need clear instructions about the marriage, so do employees during a tech rollout. Consider how a multinational company might host town halls and training sessions to introduce a new global HR system.
  • Manage Expectations: The honeymoon phase of a marriage can fade quickly when reality sets in. Similarly, initial excitement over a new tool might lead to unrealistic expectations. For example, if a company expects instant ROI from an AI-powered recruitment tool, leadership must align expectations with the reality of gradual benefits.
  • Adjust to Change: Like newlyweds learning to live 24 hours together, your team needs time to adapt. Treat this as a work in progress. A manufacturing firm adopting an automated payroll system might initially face resistance from employees accustomed to manual processes.

Stage 3: Adopting HR Technology: Staying Married

The honeymoon phase has now ended and this is the phase where the real work begins. We all know (whether you are married or not) that marriage is an ongoing commitment. It requires genuine efforts, communication, and adaptability to thrive with time.

And, the same is for HR Technology. What you need to focus on include:

  • Training and Support: Think of ongoing HR tech training like attending couples’ therapy – it strengthens the bond. For example, offering regular webinars and workshops for employees ensures they can leverage the full potential of the system, whether it’s performance management or learning tools.
  • Address Challenges: Like resolving marital disputes, addressing tech issues promptly is essential. If a sales team struggles with CRM integration, the IT department must intervene swiftly to ensure smooth operations.
  • Adapting Over Time: Needs to change with time, both, in relationships and business. For instance, a company using a basic HRIS might later upgrade to a comprehensive platform with workforce planning capabilities as it grows.
  • Foster Engagement: A disengaged team is akin to a non-interested partner. Encouraging feedback through surveys and creating user groups can help employees feel invested. For example, a consulting firm might form a task force to share tips and tricks for using new HR software effectively.

Key Takeaways for HR Tech Success (Works for Marriage too! 🙂)

  • The approach and skills needed for selection differ from those required for implementation and adoption. Treat each phase as unique.
  • Involve all stakeholders just like you involve families in marriage discussions. In HR Tech include IT, HR, and end-users throughout the process to ensure alignment.
  • Adoption and settling down is an ongoing process. Continuous engagement, feedback, and optimization are critical for success.

My Recommendations

HR Tech adoption is as delicate as handling a marriage. Give it time, stay focused, and be committed to growth. Your communication should be flawless and you need to take care, a lot of it! The objective is to create a long-lasting, productive relationship between your organization and its technology.

Remember, whether you are just starting your “dating” phase or celebrating years of partnership, the key is to keep evolving together, be it your marriage or HR Tech adoption.
